Kitchens for Fulham’s Victorian
terraces and the streets around them.

Fulham’s housing stock is unusually consistent. Long rows of Victorian terraces around Parsons Green, Hurlingham, Munster Village and the streets running off Wandsworth Bridge Road; period mansion blocks along New Kings Road and Fulham Road; and a smaller number of mews properties tucked behind the principal streets. The terrace is the dominant typology, and the side-return or rear extension is the dominant brief.

The opportunity in Fulham is the relationship between the kitchen at the rear and the garden. Most Victorian terraces here have a long, narrow plan with the original kitchen tucked at the back. Opening up the rear of the ground floor with a side-return extension — or a full rear extension where the garden allows — transforms the brief from a cramped utilitarian kitchen into the principal living space of the house.

We have refurbished kitchens across SW6 long enough to know how London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham handles planning, where conservation status applies, and how to design side-return extensions that read as if they have always belonged on the terrace. Cabinetry is hand-built in our workshop. Worktops are templated on site. Installation is done by the carpenters who built the cabinetry.
